I went to high school in Houston, worked in DC, and now live in Chicago and want to relocate back.
When I visit, I've noticed a HUGE increase in crime (especially armed robbery) and overall ghetto-ness of the city (especially in Chinatown off Bellaire, where I used to live).
Since I'll most likely be working downtown, can anyone recommend some communities which are both gated and guarded (rice military, midtown, etc.)? I don't want to worry about my wife getting robbed/raped walking the dog- I carry a piece but she refuses to.
So far I've only found Caceres (http://www.caceresliving.com/) which is outside of my price range.
Thanks in advance.

The increase in "huge crime and ghetto-ness" that you refer to may be accurate for the Bellaire/Club Creek area, but it is not accurate for the city as a whole.

The only thing gated around downtown is the driveways leading into small groups of townhomes, not whole developments.

Since this is mainly the area I know.......

there is a nice gated area on the corner of TC Jester and Ella (behind Rainbow Lodge) - and lots of gated areas in the Height's.

I find your need to carry a gun, and you wantign your wife to carry one unusual. In the most respect way possible - DC must have really rubbed off on you. If you are looking at crime stats - try and delve as deep as possible and see if it is just certain area's of town. It seems we have pockets in Houston that are hard to get under control.

I would hate anything bad to happen to anyone - but don't live in fear.

There's nothing unusual about the OPs wanting to carry a gun. DC and Chicago aren't exactly the safest places around, and last time I checked DC only lets the criminals carry.

Certain parts of southwest Houston have gotten extremely ghetto, but certain pockets inside the loop have really been cleaned up. Anonymous, I suggest you look around a bit more, or yeah - look at the suburbs. However out there you've got your issues too.

Lucky for you, women are only getting their doors kicked down and murdered in gated communities of late.

Yeah, in Fulshear, a.k.a. BFE. Simonton/Fulshear/Brookshire is straight country, not quite 'suburban' but it's getting there. This is a relatively dangerous, high-crime city/metro in general but it could be worse (like DC). Living within 50 miles of downtown assumes some form of risk. They don't pay people well here for nothing!

What price range are you looking for? Does your piece carry 16 in the clip and 1 in the chamber?

Thanks for the tips guys- my price range is <350k. DC and Chicago were fairly dangerous cities but the dangerous areas are fairly well contained and the nicer areas are relatively insulated. I feel like in Houston there are no real boundaries and nicer areas often get targeted.

Also Sally Aparece's rape and murder occurring near my old home may have had something to do with it.

The Chron article on this story was actually much more detailed and graphic but they have taken it down- it definitely left an impression on me.

To answer your other question Beto- no it does not, I carry a 1911 (7+1 capacity)

LOL... that still amazes me about Houston... you have small pockets of ghetto next to a few blocks of upscale, then turn the corner it's ghetto again. Outside of a very few "nice" areas like River Oaks and the Memorial Villages, everything in Houston is all mixed together until you get outside of the Beltway. At least in DC you know you're fairly safe if the address has a "NW" after it.
