Not at all surprising. They picked a location right across from the best grocery store in Houston (Central Market) and then offered a smaller selection at what seemed like higher prices. Yes, brilliant !

If they'd just try something in the oak forest area...they wouldn't need any other stores!

It didn't surprise me, either. When it was announced that an out-of-state chain new to Texas was going to buy that particular Rice location, extensively remodel it, and operate it across from a heavy-hitter like CM, it seemed amazingly naive. As if they never bothered with competent market research beforehand.

OTOH, when it was still Rice, I occasionally shopped there as an alternative to CM when I just needed an item or 2. It was very convenient for that.

I'll be interested to see how long the Fresh Market on San Felipe at Post Oak lasts once the new Whole Foods opens across the street!
