My daughter is currently in competitive cheerleading, outside school. I have noticed more and more high schools getting involved in competitions. Does anyone know where I can get a list of Houston, TX, area high schools entering competitions?

No girls in my school got on the cheerleading squad if they didn't have the looks. Varsity was even worse if you weren't very friendly with the football team. I hope the school you pick out is a bit more fair.

We did have the dance squad and it was everything about dance skills.

For crying out loud, that was almost 25 years ago, and an isolated incident. Way to place a blanketed statement on an entire population!

My oldest step daughter was on the varsity squad all through high school here in the north suburbs. Try out was in the spring and used only UCA judges....no student vote or popularity voting.....just skill level. Summer camps to prepare for the fall. Lots of tumbling skill required. She had lots of coaching at private studios. The school also had a competitive team that went to disney each spring. I don't miss it.

Meanwhile I also have a niece at a much much smaller school district (graduation classes around 80 students) and it was just a popularity deal. Their skill level was very low.

I don't know but while I'm all in favor of competitive cheer, I absolutely hate seeing those little girls with packed on make-up, ruby red lips and big hair ala Jon Benet Ramsey. That family got so busted by by the public and the media for beauty pageant stuff but that competitive cheer look is just as bad and yet the parents all seem okay with that look. Why can't they cheer competitively and still look like little girls of 6 or 7 years old?

My daughter is 10 and is preparing for the middle school cheer tryouts for 7th grade. She has her back handspring and back tuck down. If you don't have this then you don't stand a chance making the team. She takes lessons with high schoolers cheerleaders who are perfecting their full twists and more just to be able to make team and hopefully college team. You need major tumbling skills to make it. My daughter will start competitive cheer next year to prepare for middle school cheer. Right now we are just focusing on tumbling since it is a must.
