I'm a single 31 year old white female to Houston in a month. I'll be working near South Central Houston/Greater Third Ward. I'm hoping to have rent around 800-900 a month. Any suggestions on the best area with good restaurants and easily accessible to that area and the arts for that range?

Also, I'm coming car-less and will have to purchase a car immediately. I can't seem to figure out if I will be able to do that without a TX license and not having lived there for 30 days. I haven't owned a car in 8 years, always been in public transport cities. Help!

I'm assuming that you have received several DM's making suggestions on your situation. I'm guessing they are telling you Midtown is the place to be , but that you are going to have to up your budget to lets say $1200 mth. Am I right ? BTW where are you moving from ?

Not sure about rentals. But you may want to check out Project Row Houses - African-American artists and community activists in Houston's Third Ward for the Third Ward arts scene.

Yes you need a car especially if you are trying to be on time or don't like waking several hours early to catch public transportation. A great area is the Montrose area.

The Metrorail upgrades are almost complete in South Central Houston/Greater Third Ward and there are plenty of buses that run through the area. The Museum District and Midtown have a few apts that may fit that price range. Here is a link to where you can see for yourself details (i.e size, price range, amenities ect) on Houston apts $800-900 a month like Post Rice lofts, Washington Courtyard and other apts all over H-town. Then go to Google maps and take a virtual tour of the neighborhood to see some of the businesses that are walking distance from the property.

You do not want to live anywhere near where your work is. It is flat out unsafe to dangerous. You can't live without a car in Houston. We have crap public trans. The area you are looking for is Heights or Montrose in one of the small complexes. Search on craigslist and the link in the post above. They will not be nice apartments at that price range. Nice apartments start at 1200 a month and that is not even a real good location.

It seems like to live Midtown the budget needs to be at least 1500? I'm moving from Boston and ironically it seems like my monthly expenses are going to go up! lol

Any suggestions on how to search that area? I've been using rent.com, apartments.com and craigslist. I just seem to find really expensive luxury buildings.

Not necessarily, you can get into midtown with $1200 - $1300 just don't expect it to be "luxury"

I would check CL and see what's available to rent, check out sizes, locations and reviews. GL
