Hi Everyone,

Since my husband and I have been living in Houston for less than 6 months, I have a few questions about where we should buy a home or condo. We are DINKS (no kids and never want any), and we wanted to know if people prefer to live in suburbs or the city? I have been hearing so many conflicting reports about the suburbs and traffic. I just do not understand why all the homes in the suburbs are so close together! That is so stupid to me....why pay all that money for a home and you are in your neighbor's yard?? It is ridiculous...Many of these homes look like they share back yards...anyway.... Can anyone recommend a subdivision/area with adequate lot sizes? However, with our budget of 350-400k...I am guessing that is not possible...especially not in the city. Any recommendations please? Thanks!

What do you consider an "adequate lot size"? 25K sq feet? 100K sq. feet? 100 acres?

Glenbrook valley is close to the city with large lots. The neighborhood is a designated historic neighborhood so the homes are protected. The homes are mostly all fifties style.

It's a very neat neighborhood with fun wine nights and other neighborhood gatherings. They have a very active civic association.

400K is doable in the city for sure. You can get a townhouse for that price or you can get an old bungalow in that range. You could not pay me to live in Pearland. I have a friend who lived there with her ex-husband. Soon as they divorced she sold that house and moved to the city. You just can't compare the two. If you have kids or are home body you live in the suburbs. Or you can't afford it. It is not cheap to do.

Houses are close together in the city and the suburbs.
People don't live in the city because the houses are close together.
That being said, if you don't have kids, I would say live in the city!
Try downtown on Montrose!

I don't know if anyone can answer this for you, it's very much personal choice. We live in Pearland, we have a 1/4 acre lot in a subdivision which is gated and quiet yet in 5 minutes we can be on the Beltway. We have a son so a good school district was important and we wanted a large home.

If we were younger with no kids we might have chosen to live downtown but know the sacrifices we would have to make to do that, noisier, weekday traffic, parking considerations, smaller home for the same money. I hear a lot of people saying they like to walk to restaurants and bars so choose to live downtown but I just don't find Houston that 'walkable' and wouldn't want to in the height of summer anyway.

Like I said it's all down to what YOU want/need in a home.

Depends if you want a yard and good schools. If you don't care, then get a townhouse inside the loop. Much more amenities for a kidless couple.

I think they don't care about schools - they don't have kids, nor want any in the future.
