I am planning to build a dog run in my backyard. Instead of installing chain-link or cedar board fencing, I would like to build a ranch style fence. It would be really cool to utilized used ('reclaimed') boards/beams/posts for this (for aesthetic reasons really). Does anyone know where I can get this kind of material? I am a recent transplant to Katy and unfortunately don't know anyone locally with access to this...

I know where to get reclaimed high end wood. I don't think you won't to pay that kind of money for a fence. t I sometimes get wood here for housing projects. Call them and they might be able to point you in the right direction. They also might have what you want. This is a really cool place to go.

Clark's Hardwood Lumber Co.

Sounds like you want to build something with a rustic, weathered-wood look. In our climate, unpainted wood -- unless it's cedar, redwood or chemically treated -- will be attacked by rot, mold and termites. Paint stores have products that can give new redwood or cedar lumber the look of old wood.

That is a good point. If I get untreated wood, it will look 'rustic' within a year. I looked up the website for Tractor Supply Company (on corner of 1463 and I-10)--they sell 'ranch-style' fencing (posts + beams)...I think that it will look much nice than chain-link or tradional picket board fencing ...

Realistically the only way you can quickly get ahold of enough old lumber to build a dog run is to make friends with a demo contractor/crew and haul it away from remodel jobs, or find a place that has a bunch of pallets to get rid of. Pallets aren't hard to find, but it's very labor intensive to break them down and turn them into usable lumber.

Southern yellow pine is so cheap it's usually not worth the hassle to scavenge old boards. They'll load it right into your truck at the lumber yard too.

whut? you want treated wood. you can get another piece of wood and hit the corners a lit bit. you can also use a blade to cut ruts(?) and 'random damages' to the lumber. basically you need to dull up the edges. some people whip some chains on the wood - personally i think thats pointless.
