hi - my 4.5 year old has just been offered a place the The Yorkshire Academy. We're moving to Houston next month (we're Brits). We haven't seen the school and don't know too much about it as all our research is currently through the internet.

Can anyone give me the thumbs up (or down) for this school? Would it be a good place for an expat kid to go to, or do do you think a local elementary state run school (in a good area) would be better?

Any advice/comments will be appreciated. TIA, Fi.

I toured this school, it's in the energy corridor and the student body at that time was very international. They have an excellent reputation for musical/theatrical arts. The downside for us was that many private schools go through 8th, and this one only goes through 5th, ultimately leaving us to decide on another school for 6-8 and then again in 9th.

My son was there from 2.5- 5 years old. We loved the school. My son still talking about how much fun that was in his pre-school and pre-k. I enrolled my son to YA for 2 years before he is eligible to apply to K at our area public school ( katy isd). There are a lot of expat families. Highly recommend.

Our family used to be expat, too when we were relocated back here in houston we knew that eventually our child will have to attend to a public school.we do some research before arrival use my husband office as a pin point 10 miles radius with score of 9-10 on greatschools dot org. We have a day to look for a home Lucky enough we found our home 6 miles away from the office in a great school district.

I do like the school my son attending though 20 kids per class is a little too many but teachers are great. We are really happy with the school.

thanks both - that's really helpful information. My husband is seeing the school tomorrow night. But we have nothing yet to compare it too! Cheers!

It's a great place to start, full of Brits and other expats. You can re-evaluate your options once your here as ptt, above, and we did. We in the local school system now too.

Our 5 year old son is in his 4th year at Yorkshire Academy, and our 2 year old daughter in her first. We cannot say enough good things about this school! Compared to his peers in area public schools (outstanding Katy ISD), our son is leaps and bounds ahead. All the teachers at all grade levels know every student, creating a very family-like atmosphere.

The spots for the older kids are much harder to come by, so if you're offered a spot, take it!

Many, many, many ex-pats here from all over the world, but especially Europe and Canada. We're just plain old native Texans, but love the "international feel" of the school!

Feel free to PM with other questions!

Are there any public schools in the Houston area that expats end up at? We may be moving to Houston. While my husband is American, I'm Australian and both kids have been attending British schools in Dubai - bit confusing really!

We've tried Yorkshire summer camps. They were good. Also, my friend's kid is at Yorkshire and they love it.
