I just started a job near S. Gessner and the beltway, just east of 59. I currently live near Barker Cypress and 290. Needless to say the drive sucks no matter which route I take. I am looking for a place much closer. I was raised in the cypress/copperfield/jersey village area so I am not super familiar with the SW area, my idea of the southwest is it being a warzone full of gangs and drugs. I know this isn't true for the entire Southwest side though.

I would like to be as a close as possible to work but will consider up to 10 miles away if its a must to stay away from trashy areas. I was thinking somewhere on Westheimer would be cool, but again, crime is a concern. Or maybe down the other way to sugarland. I am looking at anywhere from $600 to $850 a month, depending on how nice and the location. Of course I'd like to be close to restaurants, retail, grocery stores, etc, but I can compromise as I want the apartment complex to be a good combo of nice and reasonably priced.

Thanks for the help.

You may be able to find a few place along Westheimer in your price range in Westchase. Although you may have to spend slightly higher than your budget. There are plenty of restaurants, retail, grocery stores, etc. lining Westheimer.

I really like the idea of living along westheimer, my main concern is crime, some stretches are pretty sketchy, and since I am not all that familiar with that side of town I am kind of flying blind.

Isn't westchase where a bunch of the evacuees were sent after Katrina?

It varies from complex to complex. Some are nice and some aren't. There is crime in the area but that's going to be the case for wherever you choose to live. Unfortunately with your budget it's going to be hard to move into an area with low crime and still be within 10 miles of your job. I pay $1500 a month to live in a safe place near work and yet crime still occurs where I live. Just part of living in the city. I suggest driving around a bit along Westheimer and Richmond and you'll easily be able to see which complexes are worth checking out and which ones to avoid.

If I was going to move to Westchase and I had your budget I'd probably move here: The Lodge at Shadowlake Apartments in Houston, TX 77082

I use to live and work at Camden Park. Loved the area. Moved away from the Westchase area in 08.
I loved that community as well but it was not free from crime. But crime is anywhere you go.
You just have to always be aware of your surroundings and not leave stuff in your car where ever yo are.
If someone wants it, they are gonna take it no matter what is deemed a safe area.

Actually, stay away from anything on Richmond east of the Beltway. Anything north of Westheimer should be fine.

Maybe you can consider some of the places in Bellaire City or Meyerland. But again, safety can vary; there's really no magic dividing line.

There are many aparments in your price range near your job but most of them would be sketchy. If you can bump your rental amount up just a bit, you may find a few "nice" apartments that you like. But as others have said, crime is everywhere.

Anyway, check out the apartments on Dulles across from Dulles High School. There are three or four of them if I remember correctly. They were nice about four years ago when I was shopping for an apartment in the area. The major intersection would be Hwy 90 and Dulles, about 10-20 minutes from your job. Or try the apartments behind the The Fountains shopping center in Stafford. That should be about 10 - 20 minutes from your job as well. That shopping center is Kirkwood and 59 South. Sorry I don't have names for you, like I said, I shopped the area a few years ago. But I still frequent The Fountains shopping center and the apartments still look well kept from the outside.

Try any of the Camden properties in Westchase. They were well maintained when I stayed in them in the mid 2000's.
