Here is two brochures issued by Texas A&M, AgriLife Extension. They enlists trees, shrubs and berries that are proven to grow in our area.

I am hoping to plant a few trees/shrubs from the list and turn them into an espalier. This would look very nice and save ton of space too.

We planted a barbados cherry tree, an orange tree, a guave tree and a blackberry bush in our yard this past summer. Surprizingly all the plants bore fruit after a few months except for the blackberry bush.

I've had some excellent oranges, limes, lemons and grapefruits grown in local backyards. For those that enjoy the more exotic, my parents' Vietnamese neighbors are able to grow all sorts of crops native to SE Asia.

Wabash on Washington or Buchanan's in the Heights. Fall is the best time to plant trees in Houston.

I actually grew an avocado tree in Houston that produced avocados.

Fig trees bear fruit there. Citrus trees will do well if you are fortunate enough to get through their first winter or two without a prolonged freeze. Pearland was full of pear orchards before the 1900 hurricane. So, the area is quite suitable for fruit trees.

I'd highly recommend LSU Purple fig tree if you can find one. Excellent, sweet fruit and they love the climate and soil here.
