Move to Austin, we got plenty of clear, clean lakes and they are warmer than Maine!

Swimming in Texas lakes is fine but do not let your child dive or jump into the lakes here as many carry brain eating amoebas that can kill you if they get up into your nasal passage.

I was not really impressed with the water in Lake Travis. Not better than Lake Conroe or Lake Houston.

Don't scare people unnecessarily, there have been only 35 cases in Texas since 1962, if you are worried: don't stir up the soil on the bottom of the lake, and hold your nose when you go under. If its not July, Aug. or Sept. its virtually unheard of to get it at all.

My favorite local lake beach for swimming is Scotts ridge on Lake Conroe.....its on the quiet northern end of the lake, and has a clean and well maintained beach. Its got a gently sloping sandy bottom ...best to go in the mornings, it can get busy later in the day.
