Some HISD schools require uniforms and others do not. Call the school office and ask. While my daughter was at West U Elementary, the issue came up for a vote by the parents and was defeated. Uniforms are more common in the middle and high schools.

Why was it defeated? I thought it would be quite popular with parents at any grade level.

ToyYot- It was a fairly close vote, but more parents voted against uniforms than for uniforms at West U when the vote was taken several years ago. Many did not like the thought of taking away their kid's right of free expression. It is a high income area, and the parents like to dress their kids in the latest styles.

I always felt school uniforms in public schools was more for the lower income areas. Thus why most of HISD and a lot of Aldine require them. In a way in those areas it's a good thing because there is a lot of bullying based on clothes. Now it's just wearing uniforms and bullying on Jordans and other shoes.

I can see why West U elem would be against it. Those parents can afford new clothes every 10 minutes whatever the cost.

Pathetic yes, but you asked why. Some of the HISD high schools, like the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA), do not require uniforms--the free expression thing. Other HISD high schools, like Lamar, require uniforms.

Yet almost all private schools require them. kinkaid is the only HS that has free dress, that I can think of. Lower and middle have a uniform
