My husband and I are only going to be in Galveston for a day and I'd love to know what the locals do for fun. I really don't want to go to the zoo or museum.. I'd like to see some alligators or critters in their natural habitat. I'd also like to know where to go to get some good food. We like the hole in the wall places that all the locals know about, nothing to touristy but I'd love something on the beach. Like fresh seafood or fish tacos.

Any suggestions? Thank you so much!

Mosquito cafe is a good lunch place. Not really seafood but you can google their menu to see. Armand bayou nature center has critters in their habitat but its nit in Galveston, its in clear lake near the NASA area. Not sure if you have to drive by that area on your way to and from or if you are in Galveston as part of a cruise and need to keep your activities in Galveston.

If you want to see alligators, go to Brazos Bend State Park

Brazos Bend State Park — Texas Parks & Wildlife Department

As far as critters go, Galveston doesn't have any gators but you can see some dolphins in Galveston Bay if you take the ferry across to Bolivar. There are also all different types of water birds along the beach.

Moody Gardens Rainforest has critters in their natural habitat. Some even roam free. While we visited, a little bird from one of the exhibits ran around and followed the people. Also there was a monkey sleeping in a tree about 5 feet over the path, and 2 of the attendants were standing underneath it so nobody tried to mess with it. Bayou Wildlife Park (drive through wildlife park) isn't too far away, but I have never been there to comment. I'm not too fond of Galveston beaches, but I do like walking around the Strand, even though it is touristy.

Shrimp 'N Stuff - Galveston, Texas
It's a cheap, cheerful hole in the wall with good food.

Moody Gardens is pretty nice, with the aquarium and rain forest pyramids. Not exactly a zoo, but much a more natural open setting. And ditto on Shrimp N Stuff. A friend told me about it years ago and we've been there several times. Too bad my wife (and kids) prefer the touristy places along the beach so that is where we usually end up. Gaidos is good too, but can be pricey. We've driven down there from NW houston just to eat there before.

Another thing to do is tour the historic home tours if you have any interest in that. There are several of them that have been there since the 1800's before the hurricane in 1900.

I think Guido's is past it's sell by date. We went a few months ago and it was mediocre at best, nowhere near as good as it used to be. Service was great however. Maybe we just had an off night but it was a pretty expensive off night!
