As others have mentioned that with a salary of 110k you won't have a problem. Just don't add to that expense by purchasing 2 brand new autos at the same time. Since ya'll are planning on renting for a few months that will give you time to shop around for a home. There are plenty of apratments there too. You may also consider Conroe, which is a few miles north of the Woodlands.
The Woodlands is a very nice place. It has grown over the years and the southern part is a bit older than the northern area. My folks first purchased a home there in the late 70's and then moved up to northwest Arkansas in the early 90's (retirement and some family there). They lived there a few years and moved back to the Woodlands in the late 90's.
There are several excellant companys in the area and it would be great if you also could obtain a job in the area as well. Driving from the Woodlands to Houston is a bit of a traffic issue. Not bad if you get up early and drive in, but the drive in the afternoon is a bit long.

You might get a little more house for your buck if you go South about 10 minutes into the Spring/Klein area. Its close enough to still use the Woodlands facilities and shopping, but you'll get 20-25% more bang for your buck, not to mention not paying the higher taxes and home owners fees. Do not move south to Spring, that area is seriously starting to decline with pockets of crime moving in and Spring ISD is headed south quick, klein is a pretty nice alternative though. Check out the school districts grades on great schools, thats a real nice reflection on what kind of community it is, particularly if you plan on having kids anytime soon. The Woodlands is relatively quiet but they are changing that, I was waiting for my wife to drive down and meet me from Dallas at the Woodlands Mall/riverwalk area and it was still rather lively around 11 o'clock on a Friday. It'll be a neat place to live unless you need alot of bars etc. around. There are several villages around the Woodlands that can meet your price requirements.

Champions/Klein area is just fine in Spring. Klein schools are very highly rated (except for Klein Forest.)

Just leave any intolerance towards gays or minorities behind if you move to the city.
