I've been offered a job in Houston and my wife and I are considering it. We currently live in Birmingham, AL and the last of our children heads off to college next fall.

My office would be off 1-10 north of George Bush Park (Park Row). I've been looking through the posts, and it seems like the Cinco Ranch/Katy area makes the most sense. We would be looking for something around $400K. We've heard the traffic can be difficult, so I'd like to get somewhere close and if my wife decides to find a job, she would likely be working in the Energy Corridor. (She's a real estate paralegal with gas/oil lease experience)

Are there other areas we should be looking into? We appreciate any advise.

You've hit the sweet spot in Houston. $400k will get you a nice house in Green Trails. Enjoy your 10 minute commute. Not sure why you'd look anywhere else.

[mod edit - no individual properties]

Why would you need something that much? Are you expecting boomerang kids? You said the last is off to college so don't most downsize by now especially if moving? Or do you still want a room for everyone to visit/if you'll have all the kids back home after college living here with you?

Not sure what the reverse commute would be to the heights/montrose but if you can handle a townhouse it'll put you closer to what the city has to offer.

We certainly are hoping for no "boomerangs"!!! We would like to find something smaller with high end upgrades, and my wife wants a pool. (Who knows why?). We just haven't seen any homes in the vicinity that meet these specs. We really would prefer something more custom, but again, don't know the area or the opportunities.

Small, high end, gated, nice pool you don't have to maintain and I'm sure you could pick your finishings:

14427 Mayport Ln, Houston, TX 77077 - HAR.com

14458 Summerleaf, Houston, TX 77077 - HAR.com

They may be sold out, but is this the idea?

Otherwise buy a house in Katy for $250 - $300k and renovate to suit.

Cinco Ranch or Cross Creek Ranch. Commutes won't be long for either of you, there's traffic on I-10 from Grand Parkway to the Energy Corridor during peak hours but that stretch isn't even 10 miles long.

You can get larger lots a little further out west.

Westpark Tollway is being extended westward
