Yuck!!!

I don't think you'll need to take the whole day, though. If you get up super early, you can be first in line.

A couple suggestions:

1. Don't go on a day when they have late hours. I found out that means they let some people come in late, so they're short staffed in the morning.
2. Don't go during school holidays. Every 16 year old will be there to take his/her driving test and that made the wait about 6 times longer than it needed to be. I made the mistake of renewing during the Christmas holidays a few years ago and swore I'd never do that again. (So check the Spring Break schedules... and avoid Good Friday.)
3. Triple check your documents to confirm you have everything. You don't want to come back.

Good luck!

3.

Thanks guys, just wanted to post my experience.

I went to the one on 4545 Dacoma, which is closest one to the inner loop. Got there by 6:30 AM (I know!), mostly to avoid traffic and was the first in line. There were like 3 people by 7:00 and around 30 by 7:30 in line.

Doors opened sharply at 8:00 AM, things moved fast from here on, everyone was friendly and it took me around 30 minutes to get done, mostly because I'm a douche-bag immigrant and they take longer to process my documents. The regular people were renewing their license in like 10 mins. Got out the door by 8:30 to make it to work in time.

By the time I left, the line was stretching outside the doors and there were like 60 people there.

God willing, no more trips to the DMV till 2015.
