What might be an average hourly or annual wage for a clerical office worker in Houston? How much per year might a couple need to make to live fairly comfortably in Houston? Thanks

Houston is a pretty big city. You can live comfortably in Pasadena making 15/hr.

As far as comfortable - what is comfortable for you? Rent or own? Square footage? Number of bedrooms? Entry level clerical isn't much, but executive level clerical can be pretty good.

I am not sure what exactly you define as comfortable, but I find the term comfortable a long stretch for below $29k a year before taxes.

People do it. Every ones definition of comfortable isn't the same. Not everyone needs the latest and greatest to be happy.

True, but in fairness the original question was regarding living in Houston, not Pasadena. I would estimate that the fast majority of truly clerical positions in Houston are between $30k and $65k, depending upon industry and experience of course.

a couple (2 adults, no children) living in Houston "fairly comfortably" I'd say $50,000/year. "fairly comfortably" meaning having an option of apartments/locations where you can live, 2 used cars, money to set aside for savings and possible purchase of home years down the road, money set aside for food and realistic amount of entertainment per month, not having to break your back or bank. i do visits at lower end apartments all through the city and there are families paying $800-900 per month to live there. it's crazy. i had a family living way out in Webster in some old complex paying over $1,000. the managers know lower and middle class families have to work around certain industries so they rack them over the coals because they know they don't have the savings or credit for a mortgage

$29,000 per year for 2 adults is a hop away from poverty standards

It is a big gap. I know clerical workers who make $8-$10 per hour at entry level clerical jobs and I know clerical workers who have worked their way up the corporate ladder at big companies who make $80k. The average is probably $25-$35k for experienced workers. It varies on industry and experience. Those $80k jobs are hard to come by - usually only to seasoned workers who have years of experience with the company they are with. Those aren't typically walk in off the street jobs.
