I've heard this is a really good medical center. Just how good is it?

The TMC is actually a collection of hospitals. There maybe better individual hospitals elsewhere but in this pod of hospitals you will find a hospital that is at or near the top of the rankings in the specialty you are looking for. This includes one of the top children hospitals in the country in Texas Childrens.

More accurately it is a collection of health care, medical research and eductation centers. It is a lot more than hospitals in that there are med schools, dental schools, optometry schools, nursing schools and downright quality research. I think there are over 50 institutions represented.

There is more building space there than the downtowns of San Antonio and Austin combined and at last count was approaching the space of downtown Dallas

Lets put it this way - if you get sick or if you need surgery - you want to be in the Texas Med Center. Living in Houston has its positives and negatives, having the Med Center is a huge positive. If you have a medical condition, you can find a best-of-the-best authority in whatever that condition is in the Med Center. To those who who need it - it is the most important luxury you will have. People think about luxuries and what a city can give them - to those who have medical conditions, there is nothing more precious than their healthy and quality of life.
