We got some Christmas gifts for family back in California from a cute store in Old Town Spring
Y'alls Texas Store 216 Midway Street 281-353-6269
yalls.com

They have a lot of gifts, including food & sauces. Not all from Houston specifically, but all from Texas.

While King cakes are good; they aren't really Texas items. Those are most frequently associated with the real Mardi Gras in New Orleans. However, they are sold here.

King Cakes are not really Houston. They come from Louisiana and New Orleans. Yeah, people make them here, but that would not be my idea of a homegrown Houston gift for anyone.

Kolaches. No one I know in California ever heard of such a thing, but loved them when I brought some back from my trip to Houston. Kolache Factory does mail-order, but I believe it's a little pricey and you have to order a decent amount.

True, however they are sold here and have become a tradition as well as being quite popular here (you will notice every Houston area supermarket has King Cakes this time of year). Galveston has hosted Mardi Gras as far back as 1867. MARDI GRAS! GALVESTON - Galveston, Texas There was an article in the Houston Chronicle talking about the King Cake and they spotlighted The Acadian Bakery in Houston that makes them. According to the article, it is suppose to be the best in Houston. They even include a recipe. Queen of king cake - Houston Chronicle

I can't think of one item that is truly a "Houston" product, except maybe, Pecans. Everything has origins somewhere else...even Kolaches and Tamales.

OP, If where you live has a farmer's market, you might find some wonderful food items, made or grown in the area that you can ship to your sister-in-law. The farmer's market by my house has everything from locally grown produce, hand creams, candles, popcorn, meats, olive oils, baked goods, all types of sauces, honey, jewelry, etc.

NEVER buy an American King Cake. disgusting. go to France and actually see what it is supposed to look and taste like. Mardi Gras and Louisiana took the "idea" and somewhat of the look from the actual French holiday staple.
