"Number of burglaries: 27,459

Houston is best known as the location of NASA's Johnson Space Center and Mission Control Center. It also saw 108,336 property offenses in 2011, of which 68,596 were categorized as "larceny-theft" and 12,281 were motor vehicle thefts. The remaining 27,459 were burglaries, which puts the city at the top of the list. So if you live there, lock your doors when you go out at night."

These statistics are from the FBI. What do you Houstonians have to say about that?

What do we have to say about this ... well, most of us who live here could have told you we have a break-in problem w/o needing a top ten survey to tell us.

This is sad. What are the reasons for this, and what can be done about this?

Have liberal gun laws. It will deter criminals.

At least that seems to be what many Texans think.

Statistics, be damned.

Are those statistics adjusted for population? Or are they just raw burglaries?

Part of the reason maybe the mix of zoning, low hanging fruit for some people.

I think those are raw burglary numbers, which will help Chicago, NYC, and LA in the rate b/c of their larger populations. But seriously, if there is a problem with burglaries (and robberies) in Houston, I'm genuinely interested in what people think could be done to improve this.

That makes sense. Detroit seemed to have the highest burglary rate I have ever lived in. In my former neighborhood, I remember hearing every single one of us were burglarized at least once within the past 2 years. It was really a fact of life there.
