Hello Houston Forum!

After much thought and inquiries on this site, my family has decided Houston has everything we need.

But if we want to minimize the amount of time we spend in traffic we understand it's better if we live close to our jobs.

However, there are a couple of other important places we'll need to be close to: a conservative synagogue and the University of Houston. I will eventually look for work at a community college part time(teaching Spanish) and my husband will teach at a high school or a middle school.

At this point we figure we could center our relocation search at the locations we know we will be frequenting, like the synagogue. It would be helpful to know where the better public schools are in that are of Houston(we'llbe homeschooling by the way) and also how large the zip code areas are and how many you could frequent w/out getting too far away from home base. We'd like housing costs not to exceed 125000.

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions.

First off, I'm a bit concerned by "will teach". Does he not have a job yet? Only the charters are hiring right now and if your husband is a public school teacher, he will despise working for the charters. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's tough for teachers right now.

Meyerland is where the majority of shuls are. I'm Reform, and mostly a HH worshipper and tend to go to the shul in Bellaire.

If you are truly looking 125,000 or so, your best bet may be Stafford or Meadows Place. You will be hard pressed to find houses that cheap near Meyerland. From Meadows Place, you can hop down Bellfort.

Yes, at the moment my husband's employed, but we're looking to move in a couple of years or so. We can wait a little while yet for an opportunity to come up. Thanks for the advice mentioned so far.

I'd recommend Robindell which is minutes away from the Jewish Community Center and synagogue. It's 3 minutes from Meyerland and houses can be found under $125. Go to har.com and search under Robindell.

Per Robindell's wiki page: "In 2009, Houston real estate blog website "Swamplot" nominated Robindell as Houston's Most Underappreciated Neighborhood. Similarly in 2010, the Houston Press nominated Robindell as one of Houston's Most Underrated Neighborhoods."

I have no idea about where a conservative synagogue is in relation to the neighborhoods I would recommend, but if you want to live somewhere close to the U of H and for your budget of $125k... then neighborhoods like Idylwood, Eastwood and Glenbrook Valley would be good choices.

All those areas you just listed $125k you will not find anything other than a total fixer upper to get into these area you need to spend a min of $175k

Hi. Thanks for the advice/suggestions.

I'm really excited about the possible opportunities Houston promises: a job for both me and my husband, at least a couple of synagogues to choose from, decent housing, activities for the family, etc. But since it's too early/difficult to tell where our jobs will be exactly, and even after we do find out if everything works out, it's kind of getting me down to think of how much time we might be stuck in traffic--taking so much time from our family, maybe I'm being pessimistic.

We had looked into Tyler before, and we really liked it, but there is no Spanish master's degree program there.

Anyway, I think Houston's a great place. I just wonder if the traffic is going to annoy me after a while. Please tell me if I'm potentially worrying about nothing
