Sobering center construction starts | Houston Politics | a Chron.com blog

The City of Houston is starting construction on a drunk tank designed to redirect the 19,000 people who go to jail each year for public intoxication.

The city’s annual cost to lease, maintain and staff the new center is estimated to be $1.5 million, compared with the $4 million to $6 million currently being spent to process public intoxication cases at the city jail.

I think its a great idea. I'm curious to know if people who get arrested for public intoxication usually go on to do a worse crime or if for the most part they are just people who stupidly got drunk in public. If its #2, then this idea is perfect for them.

It would be cheaper to build a big light-rail system to keep people from driving drunk.
Once they get to their area, hopefully it would be just a 5 mile taxi drive.

It's a great idea if their numbers are accurate.

I'm sure that's constitutional.

Exactly. It's cruel and unusual to force people to go to California.

Zing!

Look at that! I'm fitting right in here!

I completely agree.

But if that happens, it will probably be the first time in history.

I thought it was just for public intoxication--not drunk driving.

$1.5M will barely buy a train car, never mind build a comprehensive transit system. A drunk tank is a great idea, and will save the actual jail a lot of time and PITA babysitting and keeping the drunks from being hurt by more aggressive individuals in County.

Not only that, it may help with enforcement if it's easier to dump them off at the tank, rather than tying up an officer's evening processing intake at the regular jail.
