Hi, my wife and I are seriously considering moving to the greater Houston Area from Alaska, I've been paying attention to mainly Katy.

My oldest daughter has ASD and is high functioning. We have excellent services in place here, she goes to therapy 2-3 times a week for Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Physical Therapy. She was recently approved for TEFRA and we are going to be getting respite care for her so I can have someone consistent to watch her before she gets on the bus and in the afternoons after she gets off the bus.

We are wondering where the best area to move would be in regards to schooling and services for my daughter would be, I'm having a lot of trouble finding good information off the internet.

I'm currently searching for a job in the HSE field (Health, Safety, and Environmental) and she most likely will be getting a job in Houston.

Any and all suggestions would be helpful, we've got 1000s of questions!

Thank you!

I just met a couple that move to Houston for the same reason, they have lots of information on the matter, what exactly are some of your questions? People on the same situation are the best source.

Join the Houston Autism Meetup Group and ask there. Katy is pretty highly rated for special needs, but apparently there have been some problems recently. Unfortunately, Texas in general is not great and you may have to fight for any services you need. OT, in particular, is not often offered in the public schools here (we pay privately for OT). I had to google TEFRA - here that is called the Medicaid waiver and their is a long waiting list. TEFRA is only available in 19 states and Texas is not one of them.

The Spring Branch general area from the Loop going West towards Katy has a lot of schools and resources for autism. Elsewhere in Houston is kind of meh but that area has the majority.

I have heard Spring Branch is really good. We recently pulled my aspie out of Katy ISD as they were not meeting his needs, nor were they really trying. He went a whole day with no food, water, or bathroom breaks because he was non verbal and they didn't bother to read his IEP (his special needs teacher was at a conference). This was not an isolated event. After several months of misery we are now homeschooling him. My neuro-typical children are doing very well at the same school, but it was not a good place for my autistic son.
