Can anyone recommend a good, fair priced air duct cleaning company in Houston?

I don't have any recommendations, but why do you want them cleaned?

Is duct cleaning necessary?

Many wonder if they should have their heating and cooling ducts cleaned so they can improve their home's indoor air quality. But There hasn't been any hard evidence to show that duct cleaning improves indoor air quality or prevents health problems, so we don't routinely recommend it. Exceptions would be if you find mold growth inside the ducts (first eliminate the moisture that caused the mold), the ducts have become home to rodents or insects, or the ducts are clogged by debris (usually from a remodeling project). To check for these problems, take off the register covers and shine a light down the duct as far as you can see.
If you decide to have the ducts cleaned, be prepared to spend $350 to $1,000 for a thorough job that includes cleaning the entire heating and cooling system. Be wary of companies that offer “specials” for $100 or less, since they usually don't do a complete job. And take “before” and “after” looks at your ducts to make sure you see a difference.

There is a living social deal going on right now for air duct cleaning. Expires in 4 days. I know nothing about the company...

Every AC company I talk to says 'what for'......and a neighbor down the street that's been doing commercial and non commercial AC work for 35 years says the same thing. If your duct work is dirty, replace it. You can pull the register from the ceiling and look into the duct for about a foot or so and see if they are dirty. If it's flex duct, don't even bother with it if it's dirty but if they are dirty, then what does the evap coil look like?? If the ducts are dirty, then the coil is probably so bad that it's causing more of a restriction and passing bad air than the ducts are.

I wont defend my reasons for having my HVAC system cleaned -- but I'll recommend the company that did it: Power Vac America ( Air Duct Cleaning Houston, Texas (TX) ) . They specialize in HVAC system cleaning and they also do commercial air duct cleaning. I think they also clean dryer vents -- but they dont clean carpets, tile flooring, etc and they dont have $99 specials.

You get what you pay for. My house is small (1,200 sq ft) and it took them 4-5 hours to clean my entire HVAC system. The cost was almost $1,000. That was just for the cleaning. They didnt try to sell me any other services, like special coatings, additives, etc.

I own a condo in the medical district area and the tenants would like to have the ducts cleaned before they move in. It's not in the lease that they signed though. I thought it was an unreasonable request but I thought I'd check it out.

Usually unnecessary, unless you've been running the AC without a filter for years.

I just discovered that I have mold in my ducts, so I'd appreciate a referral to a reputable hvac cleaning company.

Is there mold around your registers, or can you see it up in your duct?
