And starting in Spring of 2013, United plans to launch daily, non-stop service between Denver and Tokyo. That honor was supposed to go to George Bush Intercontinental Airport, but those plans have apparently been put on hold pending the outcome of Southwest's bid to offer international service from Hobby.
United officials have made it clear, if international flights are approved for Hobby, expect less non-stop air service to far away destinations departing from Houston.

I am for anything to benefit Houston.

DFW remains more important on the world stage due to the traffic there. The FAA made Dallas and Forth Worth cooperate and build one airport. The result benefits both more than they knew.

United is so full of it... what a bunch of crap... are you going to tell me that because of this decision to make hobby international that now they decided against having a non-stop to Tokyo...? Please... It's all about Economics... This is the oil capital of the world... United is not going anywhere... they have too much invested in here... I'm glad there will be less of a monopoly here... sure that will drive their prices down in order to stay competitive...

We should care why ? If anythin this shows the thuggish tatci of united do what we want or else mindset, one would think with a company that behaves this way, you would want to weaken their grip as soon as possible, Houston is a major internation businss city, if united packed up and left , do you really think another company would not take its place

and the fact that they will be ready to go in 2013, tells us they already planned to do this, since hobby did not make their plans known till 2012

Boo-frickin-hoo. If it makes economic sense to fly Tokyo direct, someone else will do it if not United. If it only made sense when united was making extortionate amounts on their Latin America flights, I say good riddance. Maybe united will be replaced eventually by someone like virgin Atlantic, a much better run company that could use a Houston hub.

I don't understand why United is now whining and threatening to take their business to a city that is a drop in the bucket compared to Houston.

Southwest is not competing with United to Asia or Europe. They are only starting flights to Latin America because they see the exploding Hispanic population here and are trying to compete for it.

I think United bit themselves in the a** with Houstonians when they decide to have their headquartes in Chicago. Karma's a...

United is doing exactly what a little child does when it has its toy taken away... it pouts! United is pouting because it is no longer the monopoly king in Houston. There is way too much economic activity in Houston for IAH to lose business. If anything, United has 3 years to shape up and deliver service that Southwest can't. It's the basic fundamental business 101... SWOT analysis... Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunites and Threats!! If United was smart (which it isn't at all) they would totally take this "negative" (Weaknesses and Threats) and make a very good positive (Opportunities and Strengths) out of it. If United cannot grasp this concept, mark my words, they will not be around much longer anywhere!!

United can go and ..... themselves
It pisses me seeing the thuggish attitude that they took about this issue constantly saying "If Houston screw us, we are going to screw u"

The people that think that "What's good for the rich is good for everybody" should take a good look at this story
United didn't give a crap about us, they only care about their profits.
