Just wondering how long (which months) the school summer holidays are in Houston Tx? If both parents are working, where do the kids go for the break? Do the have some type of vacation care readily available?

There are tons of options out there for summer care. Just about every gymnastics/swimming type facility will offer full time summer camp for a reasonable fee. Daycare's will also offer a full-time summer program for children. There's also kids amusement type places that offer camps... e.g. Space Center Houston.

The kids' school ends at the end of May. Summer vacation ends about the third week in august. There are lots of camps; parents who work full-time usually have some sort of elaborate spread-sheet system to track which camps their kids are in when. There are so many good options--languages, sports, zoo. The JCC does stuff like circus camp, tennis camp, etc.

YMCAs have camps, The Houston Museum of Natural Science has camps (week long, but you can go to more than one). There are many options.

Not all of these are summer camps, but many of the places that offer classes also do have summer camps.

There are loads and loads of summer camps depending on the interests of your children from art, music, museums, zoo, sports, general, etc.

This year, Houston area districts should be out around the first full week in June. We typically go back to school two weeks before Labor Day.

Summer school may be an option (talk to your school) that typically covers the month of June.

When I was a kid, my parents signed us up for every vacation bible school they could find. One week we were Lutherans (the best crafts), another week Baptists (stingy with the snacks) and Methodists for awhile. Free child care!

Thanks again people ... I started goggling those VC mentioned and was blown away by the programs they offer, not to mention the cost associated with some of those programs. What we save by not sending the kids to Private Schools, we'll probably be spending on Holiday Programs - lol.

Yeah, whoever said these programs were affordable must not have researched them lately. The computer camp I was eyeing is $899 per week, per child. We won't be choosing that, cool as the camp might be.

Grandma's house!

Topaz hit the nail on the head. It's cheaper to hire an au paire than to send them to summer camp.

Just sayin'...

For affordability, try the YMCA day camps

YMCA Day Camps | YMCA Summer Day Camps YMCA of Greater Houston

Our Y camps are $150/week if you are a Y member, $200 per week if you are a *program member* meaning you are not a regular member for the year. They go all summer. They take kids from 5 to 14 and they go from 6:30 am to 6:30 PM if you need the extra care. They do swimming, arts and crafts, field trips, sports and more.
