I am an RN who lives in Houston. I've worked in the hospitals, but currently do pedi home health.I work with many LVNs. Pay is good for the cost of living. As far as transition from LVN to RN, I recommend the local community colleges. The tuition is very reasonable. I went straight for my RN, but had many in my second year that were transitioning. LVNs here do essentially the same job as RNs, with very few exceptions, however make about $10.00 less per hour. Hope this helps.

I made a post on another thread about the Texas Medical Center. I'm not in the medical field but this town has TONS of nurses and I am told they make serious money. Houston Community College has a nursing program (coleman.hccs.edu) and several other schools do as well, and they are in their own facilities in the TMC neighborhood.

Transferring your license may be a nuisance, btw. I don't know if it is just because my dil hasn't worked in a while, but I know she has to take the refresher course to get her license in Texas.

I'm no nurse, but I will tell you that I know several nurses and they got a job almost immediately after completing get their RN license....some even had multiple offers. I believe in Houston, for a recent grad with a RN, you can expect around $50k - $60k starting. This is an average range...of course some areas pay lower and others more, even for starters.

It shouldn't be hard since you already have experience. I do hear about nurses having a hard time straight out of school since a lot of hospitals require 1 year of experience. Not sure about nursing homes.
