You are about a year too late in Houston. All the good birthday party stuff is for quinceneras!

Have a dance with a DJ....you can probably use a space at your church or a local community center.

Buy her a car, preferrably a convertible. Okay, you asked and said "unforgetable".

Just sayin'...

A 16-year-old has her own ideas of what makes a good birthday party. Have you asked her what she would like? Teenagers' interests and friends change quickly at that age, so planning months ahead is risky. If you're doing this as a complete surprise for her, well...she may not like your plans at all!

Today, turning 16 for many girls isn't the time for a big "whoop-de-do" party like it used to be. In a couple of years, she'll graduate from high school and that's when many parents have a big celebration before their teenager leaves for college, military, job, etc.

In our Mexican-American community, planning a Quinceanera for one's 15-year-old daughter is another story...

Well yes I know, but she specifically asked me for a surprise party and I ALWAYS plan things a year in advance so invade something happens, I won't have to go out on a limb to correct it.

I'd send them all to a soup kitchen to do some community service. Seeing people not as fortunate will surely leave a memory. But then again, this is coming from someone who thinks birthdays and holidays are overdone and create a sense of entitlement that is running this country into the ground, so take it with a grain of salt.

Forget her friends and take a trip to Paris or something. That'll be unforgetable.

Nobody talks about or remembers parties. Everybody remembers their first trip to Paris. (BTW, Paris in May is awesome.)
