My impression is that Houstonians do not, as a rule, do so. I always do, but the pedestrians I stop for, seem very hesitant about crossing in front of my vehicle. Is there some kind of unwritten rule about zebra crossings in Houston?

I don't, I would be hesitant too, drivers here are crazy.

I take it you mean pedestrian crossings? I always do but I rarely have experienced anyone doing this here. I think they are interpreted as "ignore people in crosswalk; talk and text on cell instead and proceed without regard for anyone's safety".

I always stop for pedestrians at Zebra Crossings, and any other crossing. I find it unfortunate, that some drivers, don't let pedestrians cross. It is never hard to let someone who is on foot cross, and then easily accelerate in a few seconds (in a air-conditioned car) to continue on my way. People on foot obviously can't move as fast, so people should be courteous. Especially now that it is so hot outside! There are few out there who do allow people to cross though. I thank them every time I am out walking.

I always do and is very customary in Europe and Asia to stop. Regardless of who got the right to go, human life is more precious than you being late at some appointment.
I don't see the same behaviour in Houston. They will pretty much run you over if you're not careful. Is very SAD

Assuming you are meaning crossings marked where people also have a walk and don't walk sign? I always do but I know you are supposed to. I work downtown and amazing how many people who are unfamiliar with downtown don't understand (truly - not but being jerks) what that sign means. So you always have to look over your should before you walk to make sure they don't turn and run you over. I had one car blow the horn and just lay on it because I was crossing in a clearly marked WALK area. Then they turned when I was midway across just inches from me I guess to scare me and make a point. I flipped them off and mouthed F-off and went on my way. Probably not the smartest way to handle it.

For those unfamiliar with the concept of zebra crossings, here's a visual aid:

The word zebra presumably refers to the black and white stripes.
