Yeah, I agree with you. Some smaller up and coming bands would be awesome. But I think they're trying to appeal to the largest demographic possible with proven performers. Plus with ACL the week prior, there is plenty of live music to be consumed.

What is ACL?

Also, does Bestfest not pick up and coming bands at all?

ACL = Austin City Limits

I would imagine Bestfest would pick up and coming bands, but I think they're going after bands with more diverse fanbases, if that makes sense.

Not sure about Paul Wall, don't see he signed on. But Cake and Deer Tick are performing. As well as Buxton and also the Tontons. All of which aren't hip-hop.

I'm from Austin and a girlfriend mentioned she might drive down to attend. Is this something worth travelling for? I'm assuming there's more than just music to be experienced.

We're used to ACL, SXSW, and FFF events that are overwhelming and overpriced. Looking for something a little low key.

Not sure, since this is the first year. Well, it won't be overpriced (tickets are $25 for both days, they go up to $40 for both days Sept. 1). I assume they'll have food and outdoor vendors and that sort of stuff.

I only seen one hip hop artist; not sure what you'r talking about.

Anyways, this event could grow to be something big. SXSW wasn't that big when it first stated; now look at it. Houston summerfest is getting bigger and bigger every year.

I completely agree with you. It's got to start somewhere. They've got a pretty intriguing line up so far, and if it does well I imagine they'll get bigger and better bands each year. Free Press's Summerfest headliner was 'Of Montreal' their first year, so I think with Cake and Deer Tick, Houston Bestfest is already off to a big start.
