I will be moving to Houston in August and will be working in downtown. I searched through this forum and zeroed out on Montrose/Rice Village area to live. Energy corridor maybe as well. I like zip code area 77098 from what I can see on the internet. Can anyone suggest nice and safe apartment complexes to look at in that area? I am single female and looking for 1BR for $1200 max. Newer complex would be great.
Also, I saw in few posts that some people use realty agents to look for apartments. How does this work? Any advice on that as well?
Thanks!

Camden has some apartments right off Richmond and Eastside (between Buffalo Speedway and Kirby). My friend has a 1BR there and I think she pays somewhere around $1000-$1100. They're pretty nice and if I'm not mistaken they are in the same zip code you provided. Also, near Rice Village there a bunch of apartments: Camden Vanderbilt is off Buffalo Speedway and Holcombe (I've lived there for the last 2 years and have been extremely happy with it). Kirby Place is okay as well (had some friends who lived there...they were slightly less happy with it but still liked it okay...much less pet friendly than Camden, though, if you have a pet). There's also some more apartments down Brompton, right off Holcombe, that are slightly cheaper.

Also, if you are looking to save some money, Richmont Square is smack dab in the middle of Montrose and has 1BR's for way cheaper than any of the ones in the Rice Village area. Have some friends there in 2BR's that are spending about $950 (so the 1BR is probably around $600). The 1st-floor apartments can be a bit sketchy (buggy), but the 3rd-floor ones were acceptable. Plus, like I said, it's right in the middle of Montrose. The Menil is within walking distance, as are the bars on Westheimer (Poison Girl, Catbirds, Boondocks, etc.), provided you don't mind walking about a mile

You don't have to use a realtor you can search for an apartment online for free. There plenty of nice apartments around $800 and up. Midtown Houston, is an area where you can find a decent rentals and a hip nightlife within walking distance from most apartment in the area. You can find plenty of information about Houston apartments here.

Thank you so very much for so much useful information! I now have much better idea what apartments I should look at. I was a little overwhelmed at first considering that I've never been in Houston before but with helpful information provided I feel that my search for a right apartment will be now much smoother. :-) :-)

Yeah, those are good Montrose-area zip codes, too. You can't really go too wrong in the area bound by 59 to the south, buffalo speedway to the west, I-10 to the north (though the Heights is pretty cool too, so you could say 610 to the north) and basically 45 to the east. 610 could be your southern boundary, too, if you don't mind paying a little extra money to live in the medcenter.

yep, those are zip codes I am checking out as well. Do you know if those areas are walkable at all? Or do I have to take my car everywhere?

thank you so much for defining an area so clearly for me. I can now use map much better to narrow my search. I will be flying to Houston in the next couple of weeks to check out the area and find my new home.
