I am probably going to attend the University of Houston pretty soon and I need to decide wheather to live on campus (i heard its pretty scary) or buy a cheap apratment near it. Are there any culturally/ racially diverse nieghborhoods/areas near or around this school that buy or rent cheap?

There are not any good neighbors you can buy a house or rent most of the neighborhood within 3 or 4 miles away are really ghetto or way over your budget. Now if you want to live 6 to 10 miles away you can find a decent house 77061 77035 77096 zip codes

I think the most diverse in the immediate area would be just south of the Medical center. That area has a lot of asians, blacks, hispanics and the numbers of whites are increasing. The area is going threw transition though and is getting better.
There is a super Target in that area and two other large grocery stores.

If you live on campus you will only be near a smaller/ ghetto version of a popular grocery store here.

I didn't get that much of a campus experience living on campus at UH but then again I lived in on campus apartments not dorms.

It would be great if you can find/ would not mind a roommate and you could share a place in Montrose. It is not that far from Campus and the area has tons of young people, restaurants and is getting more and more diverse

Eastwood is right across the freeway from UH, you can do a search on here for Eastwood and will find a number of threads. There are a lot of affordable duplexes, garage apartments, fourplexes, that sort of thing. They get more affordable in some of the Eastwood-adjacent areas like Broadmoor, Woodleigh and Lawndale. Do a search on HAR for 77023. I would also check craigslist.

Streets in the Eastwood are a mess since all the trucks drive right through there & for a little more $$ you can rent a nice 1700sqft to 2200sqft in Willowbend or Westbury

There is a pretty big price spread between rental homes in Willowbend and a garage apartment in Eastwood.

I'd check out the Neartown/Montrose area. There are many small locally-managed complexes that rent for 500-700 dollars on average.
