We are 57 and 63 and am considering relocating to TX to be nearer kids and grandchildren in Houston and Dallas.

We were originally in MI and moved to Orlando, FL in 2004 and like it a lot.

Other than the kids we don't know anyone in TX so feel a 55 and over community might be for us as a way to meet others etc.

My wife thought of Austin but then why move to TX in the first place if you're not near 1 of them.

We would be interested in preferably 2500-2800sf, 3 car garage and single story.

Suggestions?

I don't really recall seeing too many residents over 55 up there. It's very much a "inexpensive place to raise a family with safer public schools" kind of area.

It's a good location for Houston and Dallas though. Houstonians basically call The Woodlands "South Dallas."

I would actually think you would do better looking at the Lake Conroe/Bentwater area. And if you get a place on the lake, it's a great place for them to come visit you.

I can't remember the exact name but I think it is called Windsor Lakes, Windsor Hills, or the Lakes of Windsor Hills. It is near State Highway 242 and IH-45. It also has it's own freeway access on the southbound IH-45 feeder road between F.M. 1488 and S.H. 242. I hope this helps you Keith and Wanda.

Bentwater looks nice but we sure won't be on the water for 300-500K but thats OK.
We will only spend 8 months annually in TX as the other 4 will be in Northern MI.
Guess which 4.

you can get a townhome on lake conroe. many of the residents are weekend owners or retired folks.

typically though, the ones i know, are split level or two story. if there is a mobility issue maybe thats not the best idea.

giving up some sq footage for literally being on the lake with a boat dock is worth it!

Default Don't do anything too hastily

We were looking at the 55+ communities mentioned earlier in the thread. And we are really not too attracted to them - Though much depends on your personal needs and wants.

I suggest renting an apartment for 6 months or so. Get to know the area.

These 55+ communites have some amenities, but are overpriced (in my opinion).

They have club houses and pools - So, you should get familiar with the activities in each one - They may not be suitable to your life style.

For instance, we have a nice pool in our apartment - But, we really do not use it that much...Though there are others here that are out there several times per week.

The 55+ communities do offer some services (such as landscaping and painting) - But, get the full facts and costs.

All in all, if you do the math, it may be less expensive to buy a single home or townhouse in a nice area in the Woodlands. Again, a pool sounds like a great amenity - But, it get's very hot here (day and night)...We're just as happy sitting inside, or taking a weekend trip somewhere.

We are still trying to make up our minds, even after 1 year. But, the truth is, we are not losing anything economically by renting vs. owning...Home prices are going nowhere, and when you add in taxes, maintenance, etc....We are doing just fine by renting a nice apartment..If a pipe leaks - I pick up the phone, and it's fixed.

Take your time, get to know the area. That's my opinion. Look at some nice apartments, store your stuff someplace away from the Woodlands (you will save quite a bit of money)..And see what it's like here...(We actually dumped our store-room full of stuff).

Windsor Lakes is a really nice 55 and older gated community with patio homes and upscale duplexes. They have a really nice clubhouse and plenty of social activities.

When I first saw the thread title I thought it was about The Woodlands having over 55 communities in it, lol.
