I'm posting this thread to help out a co-worker.She was just discussing with me at lunch that she is looking for a apartment, and isn't having any good luck .Her main issue is a felony from 2005 for drug possession. She stated she has called various apartment complex and locators and they are no help at all.

So i decided to post a thread for her some help . If anyone know of any apts in the Houston area (SW,Alief,Galleria) that will work with her.

FYI: Monthly budget $500.00 She needs to move ASAP, she is in a abusive relationship and wants to get out .............

All your help and suggestions are helpful ! Thanks in advance and have a blessed day !

That's a tough one because being "convicted" of possession means that she's been arrested more than once (in all likelihood). Did she violate probation or something?

Okay, well, that just sucks. My suggestion is to just keep applying until someone doesn't give a rat's rectum that she's a convicted felon.

The apartment locators can help. She just didn't get the right one. I was once in the apartment business and the locators would beg us to send them the applicants with felonies that we rejected. They know who will take them.

I lived in Houston and had a felony. I got an Apt from a landlord off Craigslist who didn't care if I had a felony. But he rented this 2 bdr apt for $720 and illegally sub-rented it to me and a roommate for $600 each. He got busted and I got kicked out. Had to move back to Chicago anyway.

Default Get help from the right place...

City-Data can help to a degree, but she should get help from a proper source in this case, it is too serious. She should contact the Woman's Center, they will not only help her get out of the relationship, they may be able to help her find a place to live. If the abuse is bad, they may be able to give her shelter in an undiscolsed safe house until she can get settled into an apartment. Click on the 'Shelter' link on the site.

Good luck.

She should probably find something "For rent by owner" any type of property but I'm not exactly sure ......Just a thought. Normally they don't run criminal background checks as long as you have a deposit and are nice when speaking with them.

stay clear of the corporate owned large apartment complexes. Take a day or two to drive around up and down streets in the area she wants to move to. Sure it wastes a few hours and a half a tank of gas, but i guarantee you will find literally dozens of places with for rent signs that are just some older house converted to apartments, or a place above a garage, etc. Thats being rented by the owner and they dont check stuff like that all the time.

Find a dump, close to the ghetto. They don't usually ask for background checks, or anything else. Don't try a nice place though, or condos, because they will want a police report. Even renting a condo from an owner, means that you need to be approved. Sorry, it is pretty much the same for people who are in bankruptcy...you don't get to pick where you want to live, you end up living in the place that will accept you.

I agree with HooktheBrotherUp, she needs to contact a women's shelter or advocacy group. They should be able to help. She needs to get out.
