I used to have an ant problem every spring at my old house. I had very good luck just using those little plastic ant traps you put on the countertop.

Terro, or if you're like me and DIY, 6 parts sugar/1 part boric acid powder in a water solution. Let them drink it up ... first day, you will get A LOT of ants. Second day ... still some. Third day ... most, if not all will be gone (dead).

If they are really large they could very possibly be carpenter ants and that can be a huge problem. They are almost as destructive as termites. You may need to call an exterminator. There are some very effective powers you can buy to kill them but if you don't know where the nest is that won't help you.

We have an amazing ant problem. Sometimes we get thousands of different kinds traipsing trough out house, even ont he second floor.

What seems to work is those bait traps that they take the poisoned bait back to the colony and it kills the colony. Also the various treatments that you spray around the perimeter of your house every few weeks seem to work really well. You have to spray a solid perimiter though or they will find their way in. Sprays that kill the individual ants can be very satisfying, but not very effictive. IF you do nto wipe out the colonoy or make them stay out, then they will just make more nasty little invaders to replace the ones that you kill.

most ants live outside your house and come in looking for food. THe perimiter sprays keep them out and any colonies living inside the perimeter seem to die off too. I am not sure why, but they seem to need to get out to get somethign that they need.

I use Terro liquid ant poison. Put some on the little cardboard squares they include in the box and sit them on your counters. They ants will eat them for a few days and carry the poison back to the nest. Works great! But, if you have cats, don't use this kind. Terro is lethal to cats and dogs while most of the little plastic bait traps are dangerous, but not lethal to cats and dogs (but the plastic isn't good for them either).
