Reread the OPs first post:

the house inspector said that eventually we'd have to rewire the house

So, they knew about the wiring, and, hopefully, made their offer based on that knowledge.

Happens a lot with older houses.

I am so impressed by the replies, and I am encouraged that we might not have to take out a second mortgage to deal with our wiring!
