What causes water spots on ceiling in bathroom, and how do you prevent them from accumulating.

That would typically be a result of moisture in the air from bathing or showers condensing on the cooler ceiling surface. It could be an indication of a lack of insulation above the ceiling, allowing the ceiling to be significantly cooler then the air temperature of the room. Also running an exhaust fan will help remove that moisture laden air from the room and exhaust it outdoors. In some houses I have installed a small wall mounted fan in the bathroom to circulate the air, it helps remove the condensation fog from the mirrors and should help with the ceiling also.

CptnRn has a good point...Running a exhaust fan will help remove the moisture from the air when showering and help defog the mirrors sooner.

Do you have an exaust fan in this bathroom. The fan does help with a moisture issue. If you do have a exaust fan, and you are still having the moisture issues, i would get it checked out.

Is there water leaking from something above the bathroom? A pipe, or another bathroom? Or if it is from condensation, you need to paint it with Kilz first to cover the spots. An exhaust fan or even a small wall hung fan as CptnRn suggested will stop future spots.

Last time I saw water spots on a ceiling was back in like, 1990 or so when we owned a house out in Ontario. We noticed what appeared to be water spots from a leaky roof and had been meaning to do something about it. One afternoon we noticed it was starting to crack just a little and started leaking, it was raining. No sooner than my husband walked in the door from work, the vacuum from the door opening must have triggered it.....half our living room ceiling came down, all over the place! Sheetrock, insulation, some water that had been accumulating from the rain up there, it was a mess.
Needless to say, if its leaking from above, get it fixed right away, especially with winter coming.
If its just condensation, open your bathroom window just a crack and turn on the fan after showering, to help avoid that. Hopefully, that will solve your problems.
