Cover the overflow of your sink with your hand or a rag or something and plunge it. Most of the time that will break whatever free but if not a snake is better than dumping acid down there. If it never breaks the clog you have a big pile of acid you'll have to deal with along with the clog.
Thanks for the advice. That's what I was thinking too with regard to the acid. I'm having a plumber come over tomorrow and let him fix it right. I do a lot of things around the house, but I know my limits.
Plunging didn't work so I just waited on the plumber. He ran a snake and unclogged what was a build-up of algae. My wife asked him about the drain cleaner solution that had been recommended and he said it was not something he would have done, so I'm glad I didn't either. The snake worked fine and now all I have to do is periodically treat the drain to keep it clear. Thanks again.
We use the Gallo gun all the time at work. My only complaint is it doesn't come with different size tips. I wouldn't recommend pouring bleach down the line. Pan tablets work very well to help prevent growth.
BigJon, what about sealed horizontal attic units? There are 2 pvc condensate pipes coming out of the unit, one drains into a sink drain and one outside, but they are blue-glued to the connector piece that goes into the unit. No drip pan accessible. Does any maintenance need to be done on the lines in that case?
You can drop those drain tabs I pointed out earlier when you change the filter or you can cut the lines and just install a union so you have easy access to blow/suck them out. You might have the overflow with a switch on it telling you when it was clogged. It will tell you but it no longer cooling anymore. All of these lines form sludge and what not constantly so this should be checked at least once a year. I've seen brand new condensate lines ran and within a year they were already filling with sludge.
On the outside unit its easy to make a end peice that just sucks anyhting out once in while. Air condition repair men carry a similar unit just for that. like he says put a jion i the line which most instllers do now in teh drin connection. Then vacuum the pan evry once in awhile incase of a leak in teh attic which can be a problem if not clear.
