I bumped my Yankee Candle tart burner yesterday and some of the wax splashed on the bathroom floor. I scraped off as much as I could feel, but there is still a waxy feel to the floor. Any suggestions as to how to remove this?
You can buy a bottle of wax remover. I have a bottle I've had for years that I use every once in a while to help clean up a candle drip. Can't remember where I got it, but doesn't seem like it should be too hard to find.
I did this to remove wax from a carpet, since vinyl has a melting point you might want to be careful. I first boiled a big pot of water.
Immediately dumped some of the water on the wax and sucked it up with a wet/dry vac. A little at a time and had to repeat that a few times. This removed nearly all of it however it still had that waxy filmy feel, I added a little more water and scrubbed with a dish washing detergent. The key I think to getting the film off is the combination of very hot water and the detergent. Should be much easier to get off a vinyl floor.
Just hit it with a hair dryer to soften it up then wipe it up. Dont buy anything if you dont have to. If it still feels waxy you can get that off with a product called "Goof-off" sold in any home store. It will not harm the vinyl.
I don't have the definitive answer, but I just wanted to say thank you for saying "vinyl" floor, instead of "linoleum". Too many people think it's the same thing.
Thanks for the dryer tip. I spilled an entire pot of melted wax from YC (of course it was red)and it is on my radiator cover and hardwood floor. When it was hot I got a lot up with a razor blade but after it hardened that was the end of it. Blow dryer.........best idea.
I mostly do this wax spilling performance. The trick i use is either scraping it off with a sharp knife or pouring strong floor cleaner over it. it comes of easily by rubbing the area with a brush.
The other trick I have done is using a paper bag, like for lunches, I guess a grocery store paper bag would work too. Using a low heat iron, place the paper bag over the spilled wax and begin pressing the low heat iron directly onto the bag. The wax will melt and the paper bag soaks it up. For a lot of spilled wax you may need a few bags to get it all up, once the paper bag you are using soaks up the wax and you can see it on the bag switch to a different part of the bag or a new paper bag. This works great for wax on carpet as well. Follow up on the vinyl floor with Goof-Off and you should be all good.
