Can drop-in ceiling tiles be used as surface mount, glued-in tiles? I want to cover a smooth, plain, level exterior porch ceiling with 2' x 2' ceiling tiles. The tiles I like are drop-in, but I'd like to glue them up as surface mount tiles.

Just about anything is possible!
Just have to find the right adhesive to do it.

Possibly, if they are solid plastic or metal. Most drop-in tiles are a fibrous material that provides some insulation. If they were glued up, they would quickly delaminate and fall.

Most, maybe all, drop in tiles are rated for interior use, not exterior. The humidity and temperature variations found in most outdoor areas will likely cause them to warp and buckle. They would also be susceptible to mildew.

I would stick with and exterior product.

This was accurately addressed in post #3.

Thanks for all answers. Last night I found some PVC glue-in tiles that I like better than the drop-in tiles, so I guess this thread is finished. Thanks again for your help.

I agree with posts that state the tiles need to be specifically manufactured for internal use, they are suitable by design only hence being categorized as internal or external tiles.

Yes! I did this in my bathroom with PVC tiles, which should work fine on a porch.

I used Gorilla Construction adhesive--Loc-Tite didn't hold.

The correct answer is yes, and no.

*Some* acoustic tiles are designed to be direct-glued to the ceiling. Examples are Armstrong Lyra PB Direct Apply and Rockfon Sonar (DM profile only).

These are typically not products that you can find at your local hardware or DIY store. If you use non-direct-glue product with some random adhesive, you'll likely experience varying degrees of success (maladhesion, mold growth, etc).
