Efficient wood burning fireplace insert (furnace, grill, air conditioning, heating)

We are building a new house and will have a geo-thermal heating-air conditioning unit. We also want to have a wood burning fireplace insert to use as a supplemental heating supply. I have resarched numerous units and I am overwhelmed. There are some kinds that can be tied into the heating duct system so heat goes to various areas of the house. Others just have a fan that pushes hot air out into the area where the fireplace is located.
We have an insert that just blows air out into the room. We are also building a new home and planning to do the same thing. Since the fireplace is in the family room it just warms up the area we spend evenings in during the winter and makes it cozy.
We didn't really consider one that would heat the entire house. We'll use central heat (natural gas) for that.
An ex landlord of mine had a fireplace with a grill that carried hot water off to the radiant baseboard heat setup. There was a circulator switch I had to turn on to get it going, but I couldn't tell if it was working or not because my utilities were included in the rent. The main furnace was still oil heat for the radiators, but this was supposed to boost it somehow.
Most people I've heard use blowers like niners mentioned.
I suggest you check out wood pellet stoves. It's not an insert but its more efficient and easier overall maint than regular fire place. Corn burning stoves are also out there but corn is being used for ethanol now so the savings might not be realized for you anymore on that choice. 10 yrs ago is was super cheap.

With pellet stoves you have to buy the pellets and they need electric to run....
