In my main living area, the ceiling vaults to 26'. I have two ceiling fans in this area, they are on 48" extension poles. I normally reverse them in winter, running them on low. I had read something a couple of weeks ago that if the ceiling height is very high, you should run them on med or high speeds to stir that hot air better, so at that time, I turned the fans to medium. It really did seem to make a difference. Today, I decided to experiment and turned the main centered one to high.
Anyone have any insight on this? Is medium or high speed more efficient?
I maybe should add this is split level log home. Kitchen and living room are open to each other and this is where the ceiling is vaulted. Heat sources are wood burning stove and propane wall heaters.
I have a high ceiling in the den, 20ft. I have a single 6 blade fan that runs 24/7 on high blowing the air upwards. While it seems like the fan would need replacing often, they generally get replaced with a fan of a different finish long before they wear out. The wife changes the fans every 7-8 years.
If your ceiling is actually 26' and the fan is on a 48" downrod it's not doing squat!
That fan should be on a 12' downrod.
As far as what speed- it depends. The size of the fan can make a huge difference as to the amount of air (c/ft) it actually moves- you certainly don't want to create a windchill.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, the ceiling vaults to 26' in the center of the room, the fans are not hanging that high, they are hanging on each side of the vault, probably 18' if I had to guess.
