I have an odd shaped, non standard floor intake register (old house). It's fine except the the metal grid, it hurts bare feet and feels unstable when you walk on it in shoes. And of course, it's in the direct entry path from the front door. UGH.
Custom grills are over $1000! That seems so high! The frame of it is fine - no one even needs to measure it. I just want the grid replaced with something that feels more stable. Anyone have experience with this or amazing advice ? Any recommendations about the type of tradesperson who would work on this, besides the high end custom grill folks? I'd appreciate it!
Thanks so much! $600 for standard size - that's actually not so bad, but it sounds like for a custom size, you have to pay for the cast, which is approx $500. You're so lucky !
Are there any architectural salvage stores in your area? If I was looking for something like this that is the first place I would go. You should be able to pick up a beautiful old-school version from a torn down or remodeled historic home for half the price of new (or less.) At least you would around here.
We had one in a prior house. First we changed the size of the hole so it was no longer custom and that allowed us to buy a standard sized wood surfaced grill. It looked very nice.
OUr other problem was we had a floor furnace that was inches away form that grill. The grill would get very hot and could brand a grid into the bottom of your feet at times.
When we got rid of the floor furnace, we replace the grill with a trapdoor that accessed the crawlspace. Our eventual plan was to put in a mini reach-in wine cellar that extended into the ground a little bit. However we moved before we got that far, it was likely a dumb idea anyway, but the trap door was a great idea. The rap door was covered with floring taken form a clost so it matched the existing flooring.
