Anyone have GutterGuard or GutterHelmet or some other product and what is your opinion of them. Do you still have to clean out your gutters? Are they maintenance free?
They do not look like a cost effective maintenance free solution to me but I have no personal experience. I just pay to get my roof cleaned and gutters cleared once a year so for less than $300 annually the problem is fully handled.
I had GutterToppers installed 2 years ago and haven't had to clean my gutters since. It was expensive to have them installed, but well worth it, it my opinion. I don't have to worry about clogged gutters backing up and flooding my house. I don't have to worry about ice build up destroying them, and I don't have to get on the roof to clean them ever again. They come with a lifetime warranty.
We have used a product from Alcoa called leaf-relief on 2 homes that we have owned. Just had it installed on our new home here in NC this year. It works great and is much more reasonably priced than some of those other gutter covers (actually about 1/2 the cost). It is low profile so you don't see anything but the gutter.
When I remodeled my house I had Waterloov gutter protection installed. It was the worst mistake I ever made, and I insisted they remove it after the first winter. Not only can it not handle heavy (thunderstorm type) rains without the water cascading over the top like Niagara Falls, but in the winter they cause HUGE heavy icicles to form. And worst of all, they caused ice dams inside the gutters because the snow and ice backed up underneath the top flange which is slid UNDER the front of the roof shingles; the snow/ice melted down inside the walls and caused damage to the interior of the house. This was verified by a unbiased inspection of the damage by a home inspector/engineer. Unfortunately the Waterloov installer would neither pay for the repair of the damage (they refused to admit liability) nor refund any of the $2600 the original installation had cost. I would never put in any of the solid-top gutter systems again (and by the way they do not block fine material such as new-roof granules or silt, which accumulates inside the gutter and cannot be cleaned out because the gutter is covered up). I found a local college guy who charges about $50 to clean gutters, which I have him do in May (for tree bud/branch litter) and November.
when we had a new roof put on, along with new siding, we went with leaf guard gutters. the only thing we have to do is to open a little chute on the side of the gutters at the bottom. this is an area where it catches any debris that gets into the gutters. We really love them as we live in a wooded area and cleaning out the gutters on a two story home was a pain!
I saw in a previous post someone talking about the Leaf Relief leaf guards.
I live in Canada and after a few searches on the Web, I've found the Leaf Relief products Leaf Relief // Your Gutter Protection Solution in Canada. They are available under the name Gutter Clean System. Alu-Rex www.alu-rex.com seems to be behind this.
We had Gutter Genie installed a few years ago and have had no issues. They work exactly as advertised and we don't have to clean gutters or get up on top of a tall ladder anymore. Well worth the money.
I think it was Gutter Guard that we had installed two years ago, and we haven't had to clean out any gutters since then. We have been very happy with it.
