We have a 16 year old log cabin which has the wood floors also in the bathrooms. We want to change this to something more suitable for water room and I know the obvious answer from most would be tile. Is there any other options to consider? I'm concerned about the tile cracking from settling or shifting.
Thanks, and I may also change the kitchen flooring when we redo the cabinets next year.
If the place is 16 years old and the floors are in good shape, which I bet they are, what makes you think wood is not suitable? Properly sealing wood floors are EXCELLENT in bathrooms! Kitchens too!
If you want tile for appearances that is a good way to go, and proper use of isolation membrane will ensure that cracking is not an issue -- Crack-Isolation System Facts
I concur. What's wrong with the wood? Properly finished, and maintained wood flooring can be almost as durable as tile- just requires a bit more maintenance.
However, if you think you would prefer the look of "tile" I've seen slate quite a bit in bathes and kitchens in cabins/log homes here in N. GA and NC. It has a more "rustic" feel/look that goes with the log home theme versus regular ceramic or porcelain tile.
We built our log home. Wood floors are great abd traditional in log homes. They wear well....narrow boards are more stable than wide ones...our floors are wide fir. 5 inches wide tongue and groove. They shrink and contract noticeably with weather changes because they are so wide. Narrower would have been better. A hardwood would have been even better.
Don't forget bathroom floor trap. If you need this.
Well that is a strange looking toilet connection? Is that a bell trap? They are not legal here. The toilet has its own built in trap, so there is no need for another. It would be impossible to unclog a bell trap
Home Depot has vinyl wood look flooring it holds up well, in cold or heat. I put that in my den since the dogs come in from the outside, and if its raining.. wet feet. It looks like real wood with very little upkeep. I originally had real wood floors, but decided to take it out . I got tired of the upkeep. Now all I have to do is damp mop.
