Hi Forum!

I have been working on my heat pump for the past week. I replaced the defrost board, and it now de-ices; although it has warmed up recently, so it hasn't needed to defrost. Then the fan was not running, so I replaced first the run capacitor, then the motor (got one from Ebay new for $50!). It is a go now.

It still doesn't heat well. Runs almost continuously even in ~45 degree weather.
I felt of the two lines coming from the outdoor unit. The one without insulation is the same temperature as the one with the foam on it. Both are cool. Does that mean that the freon is not charged?

Thanks!
Mike

It might be the time to get a professional to look at it.
Just throwing parts at it, without diagnostics is kind of a waste of time and money.

It could be the freon is low but is highly unlikely if it has a low pressure switch. It could be a stuck reversing valve which will do what you're saying it's doing. it could be a bad compressor. What you're seeing when you feel both lines and they're essentially the same temperature is that the compressor is not doing work.

Barking Spider is correct. Call someone that can figure out what is wrong with the system and get it up and running. Beware though that is the system is old and it's the compressor they will probably recommend upgrading to a new system. Compressor replacements are expensive.
