If anyone remembers, I did a poll on the brand of water heater that you have. This poll is different in which do you think is better? Moderator cut: snip

My pick would be gas (preferably a Bradford White or Rheem unit) with an energy factor of at least 0.62. Gas water heaters are cheaper to operate yearly than electric ones, which is why I recommend gas over electric if gas is available.

Gas water heaters last longer and much less expensive to use

In parts of the country where you can use a heat pump type water heater, which technically runs on electricity are going to far outlast any gas water or traditional "electric resistance element" type water heater REALLY the way to go. Lower operating costs, greener too.

Good point...do you use solar???

Ours is running though our GEO system.

Of course, we still need to use gas to get it hot enough.

No, but only because when we bought our house it was just built and already had a new gas water heater. If we ever need to replace it though, we would certainly look into solar.

Electric is easy enough to place on a timer and shut off during many hours of non-use. This makes them very efficient to run and they will last every bit as long as a natural gas water heater.
