I was wondering, which brand of garage door opener do you think is better, Chamberlain or Genie?
It seems that most of the reputable builders in the Phoenix area seem to have a preference for Chamberlain. However, does anyone have their own opinion?
After making a living installing garage doors and installers... I put only Chamberlain (Liftmaster with single piece rails to be specific) in my own houses and friends. Wouldn't own a Genie if it were given to me.
The "Chamberlain" line is a retail/DIY brand.
The "Liftmaster" brand is the better commercial type. This is the brand that my garage door installer used on all my houses.

FYI our new house we will be moving into has a LiftMaster (1/2 hp chain drive). LiftMaster is what most of the reputable builders in the Phoenix area use.
Looks like we have a consensus towards Chamberlain/LiftMaster/Craftsman, good to hear. Thanks everyone.
A little off subject, our old house in New Mexico still has two 21-year old Craftsman chain-drive units. Since last February, they have been having problems of opening when a neighbor opens their garages. I wouln't be surprised if it is still happening without us knowing (that same neigbor probably closes it for us).
These garage door openers are fixed-code units. We thought about replacing them, however, we recently discovered there are kits from LiftMaster to upgrade them to the latest 315 MHz rolling code (purple learn button) standard.
If we find a buyer for our old house in New Mexico and the problem is still persisting, would it be better for us to buy the upgrade kits and matching remotes, or should we still replace the units with new ones? The upgrade kits could save us lots of money vs. buying completely new units.
Chamberlain and Craftsman are basically the same units (same manufacturer if you take them apart). Had a Chamberlain last about 10 years, a replacement Craftsman was erratic and failed after about three days. I bought a Genie unit and had it installed, in less than two hours they installed it, checked doors/hinges etc and 3 years later still trouble free.
Other people may have different experiences, claims etc.
