Yeah, I've only owned 3 homes but the kitchen (IMO) is really the focal point of a house. Get it "right" and you have two very important factors covered, 1) A happy wife (which makes for a happy life) and 2) Great resale value.
Matt - something else you need to be aware of: if you go to plywood frames (a major and worthwhile upgrade in most cases if you are going for quality) be sure that the cabinet supplier is using US sourced plywood meeting CARB II (California Air Resources Board) certification, the same issue applies to non-US plywood suppliers, (usually Chinese). You also don't want to buy any cabinets that don't have KCMA (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association) certification.
Trivia point - there are very high quality cabinets using furniture grade MDF particle board, mostly European suppliers, that are excellent quality (and expensive). The "particle board" MDF furniture quality frames are not the same stuff you get at Home Depot.
PS - definitely go for the full extension, soft close drawers and doors - they are worth the cost.
