So in the winter, when I want to move the heated air back down to our level, I should have the fan moving in a clockwise direction? And the other way during the summer? I think all fans should have a WINTER/SUMMER button on them..right next to ON/OFF. That would be perfect for folks like me.

Whether it's clockwise or counter-clockwise would be dependent upon how the blades are positioned.
We have cathedral ceilings like the Op and in the summer we just turn the fan off and let the heat stay up in the ceiling- why move hot air down? I agree the fan should hang lower than it is - but 7-8 feet from the floor would look totally ridiculous.
Nice job hanging the pictures on your wall OP- I could never figure out a pattern like that in a million years- I must have stared at it for 5 minutes!-well done!
You know, it's really not all that cold inside the house without having heat or A/C running. The sun heats up the building somewhat, and it's insulated fairly well. Since there's no wind inside, it's not too cold at all.
just had an hvac/home effenciency auditor out to my house for a design of a new furnace/ac system. He said with vaulted or high ceilings you want the fan turning counter clockwise blowing down during the winter to keep the hot air down. With 8ft ceilings you follow the normal summer and winter turn recommendations. When blowing down in the winter with vaulted or high ceilings, you want the fan speed to go no higher than medium, preferably on low.
Took his advice and it worked. It eliminated cold spots.
