I heard of someone Buying a Honda Civic for $1700 and then selling it for the same price after a few years of using it. Could you achieve the same result even if you bought a civic that costs around $1000?
1) If there is some inflation, it's not going to lose value
2) Cost of driving it is mostly maintenance and repairs
3) Unless you end up selling it in distress

For any vehicle, it just depends on how good a deal you got and how badly someone else wants it after two years. And, whether you keep it in good shape. I bought a 1997 Ford Escort for $900 just over two years ago, and see them advertised now for $1,800-2,500. That doesn't mean I could get that for it, but mine was worth $2,500 according to KBB when I got it.
At that point the vehicle is depreciating so slowly that I wouldn't doubt you could find the right buyer to buy it for close to the purchase price.
My first car in high school was a used 2002 Hyundai Accent (got it in 2003) that I bought for $3700 with 13k miles on the clock and I then sold it with 65k miles for $3500. That was a sweet deal.
That seems quite possible for a car with a good reputation for reliability, that is not too new and not too old. You would need to buy at a good price (certainly this is not going to happen if you buy from a dealer). And you would need to work at selling it.
I agree with the maybe's
It is going to depend on the market. The current trend is that the fuel efficient 4 bangers are in and this might not be the case a yr or 2 from now. However, I would like to add that when you are talking about a late model car with 120k and you add on 20-30k during your ownership, I would doubt that there would be much difference in desirability between a 120k and 150k car.
